program at UIUC and are interested in joining the group are encouraged to contact Prof. Graduate students who have been admitted to a Ph.D. We welcome students from Chemistry, Physics, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and related departments.

We are looking for motivated and talented graduate students interested in molecular modeling and artificial intelligence. Primarily, we use the group cluster, “scruggs”, and the community cluster, “lop”, run out of the School of Chemical Sciences. If further resources are required, we utilize NCSA clusters Delta and Hal or resources nearby at Argonne National Laboratory. We benefit from the plentiful computational resources on campus.

Through these diverse efforts, students are prepared for a broad set of career opportunities, such as those in specialty chemicals/materials, biotech/pharmaceuticals, scientific software, data science, software engineering, consulting, government, national labs, and academia. The group maintains multiple experimental collaborations that are facilitated via strong affiliations with the Beckman Institute and Molecular Maker Lab Institute. Students will learn a variety of theoretical and computational chemistry tools, including quantum chemical and model hamiltonian electronic structure calculations, classical molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo, machine learning, and network analysis. Research in the group is highly interdisciplinary. Our work integrates quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and machine learning to characterize the multiscale structure and function of soft materials with useful optical, electronic, and sustainability applications. As with most research laboratories, JAX spends a lot on staff compensation because at the heart of the organization’s mission is research conducted by employees. In summary, JAX is a well funded organization with a strong financial foundation. It is worth noting JAX posted a $38 million dollar unrealized loss on investments in 2018 which means the general fund balance would have been considerably higher if this loss did not occur. Collectively, JAX spent $77 out of every $100 in revenue reported, allocating the remaining revenue ($23 out of every $100) to the general fund which had $740 million at year-end. Using the above information, every $100 in revenue was spent as follows:Īs illustrated above, nearly half of revenue was spent on staff compensation. JAX spent $77 out of every $100 raised in 2018, with the unspent revenue added to the general fund, which had a $740 million net asset balance at year-end. $58 million, or 13% of revenue was spent on supplies followed by $29 million (7% of revenue) on Office-Related Expenses. Given that the organization is focused on research, it is not surprising that compensation is the largest expense.

2,557 employees received $206 million, or 48% of revenue, as compensation, which means the average compensation was $81,000. $ 9 million (2% of revenue): Travel and ConferencesĪs illustrated above, compensation is the largest expense for JAX.advertising and promotion, royalties, interest, etc)
